Fixed pairs instead of constant change
Team Americano answers the most common objection to Americano: some people want to stay with their partner. Couples, established doubles, friends who train together.
Here the teams stay together for the whole tournament and play everyone against everyone — each team meets every other exactly once. The result is a team ranking.
How many matches does that make?
The number grows quickly. Eight teams already means 28 matches, so it pays to work it out beforehand.
| Players | Teams | Matches | Rounds on 1 court | on 2 courts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 6 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| 8 | 4 | 6 | 6 | 3 |
| 10 | 5 | 10 | 10 | 5 |
| 12 | 6 | 15 | 15 | 8 |
| 14 | 7 | 21 | 21 | 11 |
| 16 | 8 | 28 | 28 | 14 |
What to do with many teams
- Split into groups. Eight teams in two groups of four: six matches per group instead of 28 overall, then a short knockout between the group winners.
- Shorten the matches. Play to 11 points instead of 21, or on time.
- Not everyone against everyone. Each team plays five random opponents instead of seven. The table stays meaningful as long as all teams played equally often.
How teams are formed
| Method | Result | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed entry | Everyone brings their partner | Club events, entered doubles |
| Draw | Random pairs | Open evening, sociable group |
| Strong with weak | Balanced teams | Wide gaps in ability |
The third method is the best compromise for a mixed group: the strongest player gets the weakest as a partner, the second strongest the second weakest, and so on. Teams end up closer together and no team loses match after match.
An even number is required
Team Americano needs pairs. With an odd number someone is left over and the format cannot be played. The planner points this out and suggests Americano instead, where odd numbers are no problem.

- Can teams be swapped during the tournament?
- Technically yes, sensibly no — the results so far belong to the original pairs and cannot be transferred cleanly.
- What if not everyone can play everyone?
- Then play fewer rounds. The table stays meaningful as long as all teams played the same number of matches.
- Does it work with an odd number of players?
- No. Team Americano requires pairs. With an odd number, Americano is the format that fits.
- How long does a six-team tournament last?
- Fifteen matches. On one court at twelve minutes per match, that's three hours. On two courts, around ninety minutes.
- Does Team Americano work with four players?
- Yes — with four players two fixed teams face each other over several matches, and every match counts separately in the table. All you need is an even number of players, because teams stay together for the whole tournament. Six players make three teams playing round-robin.
