Lose once and the evening is over

The knockout is the format with the clearest answer to "who won?" — and the biggest drawback: lose the first match and you are out.

Fixed pairs compete in a bracket. Winners advance a stage, losers are eliminated. This continues until one team is left.

For a sociable padel evening this is rarely the right choice — half the group has nothing to do after the first round. As the finish to an Americano evening it works well: two hours of everyone against everyone, then a short final between the best four teams.

With a single court the matches of a stage are played one after another. The planner spreads them across several programmes — so a quarter-final with eight teams runs as four consecutive rounds.

Byes

A clean bracket needs a number of teams that is a power of two: 2, 4, 8 or 16. Six teams do not fit — two of them get a bye and enter at the second stage.

That is a noticeable advantage. Byes are usually given to the strongest teams or drawn by lot. For complete fairness, pick a team count that needs none.

Seeding — and why it matters

Where a team sits in the bracket often decides more than ability does. Put the two best teams in the same quarter-final and one of them is out immediately.

Match 3Team 3 v Team 6
Match 4Team 2 v Team 7

Teams 1 and 2 can now meet no earlier than the final. Where the order comes from is up to the group — a previous Americano, a club ranking, or the organiser's judgement.

Calculated at twelve minutes per match. A knockout is far shorter than Team Americano with the same number of teams — seven matches instead of 28 for eight teams. The price: only half the group plays after round one.

Frequently asked

What happens to eliminated teams?
Nothing — that is the weakness of the format. To fill a whole evening, play Americano first or add a consolation round.
Does knockout work with an odd number of players?
No. The format needs fixed pairs, so an even number. With an odd number, Americano is the alternative.
How are the first-round pairings determined?
By draw or by seeding. If you've played Americano first, use that ranking — that way the strongest teams meet late.
Is there a third-place match?
Optional. It costs one extra match but gives the two losing semi-finalists another outing.
How many players do you need for a knockout?
Eight or sixteen players are ideal — four or eight teams give you a bracket without byes. With four players the knockout becomes a straight final: one match, one winner. Either way you need an even number of players so fixed teams can form.
